Which is great news for everyone that wants to purchase the game but forget about a free upgrade if you already own in Xbox One that’s a process that’s, as you guessed, being blocked by legal procedures.
This digital-only version of the game features a 4K resolution running at 60fps, speedier load times, and just an all-around crisper graphical touch to everything. There’s a Deluxe Edition which nets you the Merciful Madness DLC too, which is mainly just a handful of extra quests. If you’re wondering about a PS5 version, that’s already out there, similarly restrained to a “purchase only, no upgrade” system due to the game’s publisher Nacon, formerly Big Ben Interactive, claiming copyright over The Sinking City, withholding milestone payments, and refusing to pay millions in royalties.īecause the older gen versions of the game have been claimed by Nacon as its own intellectual property, Frogwares has been barred from offering people who already owned the game the free upgrade. The game was pulled from Steam by Frogwares and was reportedly replaced by an altered version of the title by Nacon that removed any and all mention of the original developers. Back in June of 2019, The Sinking City was released for consoles and I reviewed it.

It’s a messy situation all around but if you’re interested in checking out The Sinking City (I enjoyed some elements of it) you’ll now have the opportunity of the Series X/S.Frogwares' 1920s investigation title, The Sinking City, embroils players in the dark world of Charles Reed, a private investigator. The Sinking City is an investigative horror game, combining several different styles of gameplay and environments, and set in the weird and grim city of Oakmont, flooded and inhabited by similarly gruesome creatures. Fast forward to about two weeks ago, and developer Frogwares did a short-notice, surprise release of a significantly enhanced version of the game on PS5. In broad strokes, you play Charles Reed, an ex-Navy sailor turned Private Eye, who is beset with disturbing visions and dreams. Reed is tormented by dark visions, and in an attempt to escape his waking nightmare he heads to Oakmont, Massachusetts.

The city is full of supernatural horrors, and in an unlucky turn of events, Reed is thrust into this dark underworld. Reed’s story is pretty fitting for the game’s developer Frogwares (thanks, Eurogamer), which has been in legal disputes for quite a while with The Sinking City’s previous publisher, Nacon (formerly, Bigben Interactive). The game was originally published on Xbox One by Nacon, which according to developer Frogwares, attempted to claim copyright of The Sinking City after it was released, withheld milestone payments, and owed Frogwares royalties equating to around €1 million. The Legal dispute between developer Frogwares and French publisher Nacon has been ongoing since the game was removed from digital store fronts in August 2020. It’s all quite a nightmare, and due to the disputes between the two companies, The Sinking City for Xbox Series X|S consoles - now published by Frogwares directly - consumers are literally paying the price because the upgrade cannot be offered freely. #When was the sinking city released upgrade
If all of that hasn’t scared you away, the Xbox Series X|S enhanced version of the game can currently be purchased as a digital upgrade. According to a listing on Amazon, the console version of The Sinking City now has a release date of May 31st. The new optimisation features bring 4K/60fps, increased graphical fidelity, and faster load times. Even more telling is the game’s Steam entry, which lists the release date as 2019. You can also experience new quests in the latest DLC pack, Merciful Madness, which may be a great time to put those new visuals to the test.
